Ramsay Tower

Residential

Calgary, Alberta

Ramsay is one of Calgary’s older, most diverse and dynamic communities. The prevailing residential form of the community is a low-rise bungalow, but in recent years the entire area has seen a lot of redevelopments. There are few new three-storey structures which not only provide additional livable floor area but also take advantage of breathtaking views from the third level roof decks.

This project - which will be an addition to and rehabilitation of a treasured dwelling - is located between two significant neighborhood structures: the historic Ramsay Residence to the west and a new 3-storey contemporary residence to the south. The property owner, an actor and theatre director, envisages a long-term participation in the local community. The existing property will remain the owner's main residence, but with this new studio extension, he will be able to take full advantage of his lot spectacular location.

The project’s overall architectural influence and inspiration come from the rich tradition of Calgary modernistic architecture. The two forms, the existing “horizontal” mid-century bungalow and the new “vertical” contemporary addition will be linked by a new porch, which derives its roofing form from the bungalow’s hip roof. The main structure is clad in metal, which has been inspired by Ramsay’s industrial past. The cladding responds also to the harsh micro-climatic occurrences on the Scotsman’s Hill - strong storm winds which often bring horizontally blown rain and snow and sometimes loose debris. The same finishing will be used for re-cladding of the existing roofing and partially the side walls of the bungalow, thus blending the new and the old.
