West 1408

Multi-family

Calgary, Alberta

West 1408 is a 43-unit student housing development located on a compact urban site directly across from a Calgary train station, offering residents immediate and convenient access to public transit. Designed with active transportation in mind, the building prioritizes cycling as a primary mode of movement by providing generous and secure bike parking facilities. This approach supports sustainable mobility while responding directly to the needs and lifestyles of a student population. Although the site presented significant challenges due to its tight constraints and proximity to major infrastructure, the design employs adaptive and efficient solutions to maximize usable space while still creating a comfortable, functional, and vibrant living environment.

The main north façade faces the busy Bow Trail and plays a critical role in shaping the public presence of the building. This elevation features an engaging architectural expression that contributes positively to the urban streetscape, using a carefully composed mix of materials, articulated forms, and varied massing to reflect the energy and movement of the surrounding area. The building integrates seamlessly into the context, balancing density with livability and addressing the needs of modern student life while enhancing the character of the neighborhood.
