The cannabis production facility for Fort McMurray #468 First Nation is located near Gregoire Lake, approximately 50 kilometers southeast of Fort McMurray. The 24,000-squarefoot building is designed to produce 2,600 kilograms of cannabis annually and follows a standardized design developed by RavenQuest BioMed, a partner of the First Nation. The facility incorporates innovative space-saving technology called Orbital Gardens, in which marijuana plants grow around a central light in rotating chambers. This approach allows for highly efficient use of space while optimizing growing conditions, supporting consistent and high-quality production.
Architecturally, the building was designed to blend seamlessly with the surrounding muskeg landscape and reflect the natural beauty of the area. Tall columns resembling wood logs give a vertical rhythm to the interior and exterior spaces, while the glass façade draws inspiration from the icy surfaces of nearby Gregoire Lake. These design elements echo the surrounding landscape formations, creating a visual connection to the environment and reinforcing the facility’s integration with its site. By combining cutting-edge cultivation technology with thoughtful, context-sensitive design, the project balances operational efficiency with cultural and environmental considerations, providing a landmark facility for the Fort McMurray #468 First Nation that respects and complements its natural surroundings.
