Design Requirements

In a similar way to the Bamburgh Residence, this multifamily development housed four three-bedroom units. As the development catered to an aging population, accessibility was a key concern.

Solution

The building was located as close as possible to the east setback to create a sideyard at the other side of the development that would also work as a main accessibility corridor to let people into the units. Both the front and rear units included an elevator for easy access to all floors. On the west elevation, the building was allowed to provide larger vertical windows as it was far removed from the side property line. On both sides of the building, vertical articulations enhanced the contextual nature of the development and helped read the different units within. The inspiration for the design was drawn from the Carisbrooke Castle in Isle of Wight, UK.
