FIRST NATIONS SENIORS HOUSING
LOCATION: Stand-Off, Blood 148, Alberta
SIZE: 65sm (per unit)
STATUS: Design
Design Requirements
Located in Southern Alberta, the building form of this housing prototype needed to accommodate a compact floor plan layout of 1,500 square feet—1,100 sq ft in the main floor and 400 sq ft in a loft—containing two bedrooms, a bathroom, kitchen, living/dining spaces and ample storage areas.
Solutions
This design was inspired by the vernacular Tepee. The building was designed to be environmentally sustainable; stack effect, cross ventilation, passive heating and thermally broken assemblies all contributed to a high performing building. In addition, robust and durable materials were chosen to respond to harsh weather conditions.
