RAMSAY TOWER
RAMSAY TOWER
LOCATION: Ramsay, Calgary, Alberta
SIZE: 100sm
STATUS: Complete
Design Requirements
To provide extra livable floor area and take advantage of breathtaking views, the client wished to add a studio extension on top of their bungalow while keeping the main residence intact. The addition needed to feel like a natural extension of the bungalow.
Solutions
The project’s overall architectural form came from a juxtaposition of the existing “horizontal” mid-century bungalow and the new contemporary vertical “tower” addition. The new structure was clad in metal, a nod to Ramsay’s industrial past. The same finishing was used to re-clad the existing roof and partially the side walls of the bungalow, thus blending the new and the old with one material. The old building reminds us that the past has an important place in the built environment, and the new addition shows us that the world is changing.
